Neurologist Solveig E. J. Dalbro publishes first research article using BulbiCAM

Solveig E. J. Dalbro, a key collaborator of ours, has reached an important milestone with the publication of her first paper in Frontiers in Neurology. The study, titled “Repeatability, reliability, and stability of eye movement measurements in Parkinson’s disease, cerebellar ataxia, and healthy adults,” highlights the potential of eye movement analysis in neurological diagnostics.

Throughout this research, Solveig was supervised by Prof. Emilia Kerty, Ahmed Elsaid from Oslo University Hospital and Stig Larsen from Meddoc Research AS, whose guidance was crucial to the success of the study.

Solveig’s study examines the accuracy and consistency of eye movement measurements in three distinct groups: patients with Parkinson’s disease, individuals with cerebellar ataxia, and healthy adults. Using our BulbiCAM platform, the research focused on four key eye movement tests: Fixation test, Pro Saccade, Smooth Pursuit, and Saccade Analysis.

In the study, Parkinson’s disease (PD) patients showed significantly reduced fixation stability compared to healthy controls (HC), with more frequent and larger involuntary eye movements. For saccadic performance, PD patients had longer latencies (delayed saccade initiation) and hypometric saccades (undershooting the target), while HCs had faster and more accurate saccades. These consistent differences help quantify oculomotor deficits in PD. The full article can be read here: https://www.frontiersin.org/journals/neurology/articles/10.3389/fneur.2025.1556314/full

Oculomotor deficits in Parkinson’s disease have been well-documented with various high-resolution eye trackers in previous studies.

However, the BulbiCAM study is notable for its calibration-free, portable design, and repeatability in a clinical setting, making it more practical for routine monitoring and longitudinal tracking.
